The United Nations building in New York is all set for renovations. Post 9/11 the renovations will address the issue of terrorism as the original windows get replaced by blast proof glass. The major renovations, the first of its kind in 60 years have been slow because of security measures.
The UN buildings and compounds have been the target of terrorism. 12 members of staff in Abuja, Nigeria died in a bomb explosion in a car in which they were travelling. UN's Baghdad office was attacked in 2003 when 21 people died including top envoy, Sergio Vieira Di Mello.
According to Michael Alderstein, a New York based architect and executive director of the project, the renovations at the UN have more complications than other restorations and makeover, as high level work continues daily along with the remodeling work.
However the work related to the renovations have been having its share of problems. The noise arising out of the construction and remodeling activities have been objected to by UN staff. Moreover some 3000 staff members are being relocated to different areas in Manhattan as the 2 billion dollar makeover takes shape. Issues arising out of construction activities related to workers health are also being looked into.
The work is expected to get completed before September 2014, when the annual ministerial meeting of UN General Assembly takes place.
